WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Siena Saints defeated the Monmouth Hawks by a score of 72-86 at the Ocean First Bank Center Friday night. By Siena getting their fifth road win of the regular season, the Saints now clinch the #1 seed ahead of next weeks MAAC tournament in Atlantic City.
The Saints spoiled the Senior Night celebration of Louie Pillari, Mustapha Traore, and Sam Ibiezugbe by shooting 55 percent on the evening while in route to the victory. The Saints had five players in double figures, led by Donald Carey Jr. with 18 points on 7-11 shooting. Manny Camper also was dominating the glass at ease with tallying 18 rebounds to go along with 14 points en route to the victory.
On the Monmouth side, The Hawks were led by Junior guard Deion Hammond. One half of the Monmouth dynamic backcourt pairing was able to score 27 points on the game, shooting it at an impressive 11-22 from the field. Sophomore guard Samuel Chaput also eclipsed a career high dishing out 11 assists in the game.
The Saints opened up a big lead early on in the game, leading by as much as 18 in the game. Early in the second half, the Hawks responded with an 11-1 run of their own cutting the lead back down to nine.
Monmouth locked up the fourth seed in the upcoming MAAC tournament with the loss at home, while the Saints clinched the MAAC regular season title under first year head coach and Siena alum Carmen Maciarello.
The Hawks look to make their way to March Madness as they face the Quinnipiac Bobcats in their first game of the MAAC Tournament. The game is set for a 9:30 PM tip-off.
