The NFL’s Las Vegas Experiment on Pause for Now

The future stars of the NFL will get to see their lives change for the better, just behind a laptop screen. Commissioner Roger Goddell sent a memo out to all 32 clubs saying that the 2020 NFL Draft will still be held during its original date of Thursday April 23rd- Saturday April 25th just in a virtual presentation.

The original plans for the draft were to take place in the middle of the World’s Famous Bellagio Fountains, with a water stage and the players drafted were to get driven via boat to the stage. No, I am not lying. Look.

The 2020 NFL Draft is now just another name on the long list of events that have been hindered from the spread of COVID-19, as Las Vegas was preparing to host its first event as an NFL city its NFL debut is now unknown. The Las Vegas Raiders have two first round selections (12, 19) and are looking to make a splash by drafting key pieces to make up a team on the rise. The Black and Silver finished 7-9 last year, which is not bad after the Antonio Brown debacle which casted a dark cloud over the beginning of the season.

As the draft moves forward, and so does the 2020 season is still on track to start on time one question that has been raised is where are the Las Vegas Raiders going to be playing their home games? Their new home stadium, Allegiant Stadium has been struck with some construction delays due to the spread of COVID-19 and might not be ready in time for the beginning of September, let alone the pre-season.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the club has been moving forward with plans to look to other cities if the stadium is not complete in time. Cities such as Salt Lake City, Phoenix and San Diego have all been discussed as temporary homes for the Raiders. This is not the ideal start for the NFL’s start in Las Vegas, but if we’re being honest this isn’t many people’s ideal situation. As we anticipate a return to normality, we will see how the silver and black respond to the times, but until then they have a big draft ahead of them, along with a quarterback competition between veteran Derrick Carr, and former Heinemann winner Marcus Mariota.
