Top 5 Sports Movies to Watch During Quarantine

Ever since March 12th, the world has ditched the great outdoors for the comfortable confines of their homes as the quarantine caused by COVID-19 has taken over the world. As this pandemic plays its course, and with sports out of the picture for the time being, sports fans just like me and you are left with a major source of our daily entertainment out of the window. With that being said, I am one of the sports fans that have been finding myself filling the void of live sports, with sports movies. Here are my 5 must see sports movies, and if you have not seen them what the hell is wrong with you!

5. A League of Their Own (1992)

RATING: PG

A League of Their Own Is a dramatization about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The movie takes place during WWII, when the stars of the MLB of the times turned in their baseball uniforms for Army ones, Cubs owner reacts to the times by convincing the owners to put their money towards a women’s baseball league. Tom Hanks plays the role of the manager of the club, as Hollywood staples like Madonna, and Rosie O’Donell anchor the mostly female cast. The movie is a progressive film about the American Pastime and is a movie that is suitable for all ages.

4. Fever Pitch (2005)

RATED: PG-13

I get it, I know a lot of you guys are not happy about this one, A BOSTON MOVIE?! I don’t know what is going to go over worse, the fact that this is a Boston movie, or it is not your average tough guy sports film. Similar to A League of Their Own, Fever Pitch pulls at your heartstrings when showing the love that Fallon and co-star Drew Barrymore cultivate over the 2006 Boston Red Sox season. The film shows how love, and the love for sports can go hand in hand, and regardless of your baseball fandom this movie is a great watch and shows a lot of historical footage of the Red Sox breaking the Curse of the Bambino.

3. The Sandlot (1993)

RATED: PG

The 1993 Disney movie is a coming of age film about a group of friend’s great sense of imagination, mixed with their love and passion of the game of baseball. The Sandlot is a cult classic and given us many things to take away from the film, most importantly the legendary “you’re killing me Smalls” quote. The film tells the story of one Scotty Smalls, the new kid in town who once had no knowledge of the game, to rising up to be one of the stars of the makeshift baseball league. The film’s magic has tried to be duplicated on several occasions, through both sequels and spinoffs, but the 1993 film stands out as not only one of the best sport movies of all time, but also one of the standout films in the saturated pool of Disney films.

2. Miracle (2004)

RATING: PG

For number two, I think Miracle is the only option. This film is another great sports film made by Disney, and the second one to make this very list. Miracle tells the true tale of the 1980 US Men’s Olympic Hockey Team and their quest to the eventual gold medal game victory over the Soviet Union. The Gavin O’Connor production shows a dramatized version of how the United States’ achieved the unthinkable winning a game that is popularly known as ‘The miracle on ice’. The film also has one of the better monologues that I have heard in recent memory when coach Herb Brooks addresses his team before the game. Regardless of your fandom or native country, his speech is something that will light the fire in your heart and make you motivated to do anything.

1. Space Jam (1996)

RATING: PG

When you get the world’s most famous athlete to take his talent to the silver screen, you have some expectations to live up to, and Space Jam did exactly that. The 1996 film intersects the worlds of the NBA and the Looney Toons in a multi universal journey leading to the unworldly matchup between the Toon Squad and the Monstars. Jordan is not the lone NBA star in the film, he is joined by fellow notable NBA alumni such as Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Muggsy Bogues, Larry Bird, and even had actor Bill Murray in on the action as well. The film did so good that even the Space Jam soundtrack went OVER 6X platinum. This film is truly one of the best sports films due to its light heartedness, the great blending of the two universes, and the willingness of the NBA stars to join in on the action made this movie a staple of my childhood and my favorite sports film of all-time.
